Collection Overview

The collection contains oversize photographic negatives of plans of Fort Johnston, in present day Southport, North Carolina from 1767 to 1865. In 1992 these negatives were entrusted to Wilson Angley of the Research Branch, North Carolina Division of Historical Resources, by archaeologist Richard Kimmel of the Wilmington District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Negatives were to be used in compiling a documentary research report on Fort Johnston, and were later to be placed in the iconographic collection of the North Carolina State Archives for permanent safekeeping.
