Collection Overview

The collection consists of images of Luther Hartwell Hodges (1898-1974) during his two terms as governor from 1954-1961. Most of the views date from that period, but a few of them show Hodges as a younger man. More than one fourth of the slides are political cartoons that relate to Governor Hodges' administration, and the majority was drawn by the talented cartoonist, Hugh Haynie. Nationally prominent figures, such as Senator John F. Kennedy, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, Authur Godfrey, and former presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Harry S. Truman appear in the slides. Notable North Carolinians who appear in the slides are Terry Sanford, Edwin Gill, Maurice V. Barnhill, J. Wallace Winborne, and Senator B. Everett Jordan. In addition, the collection contains views of Hodges undertaking such gubernatorial duties as greeting celebrities at the Governor's Mansion, inspecting hurricane damage on the coast, and attending conventions, meetings, and banquets.
