Collection Overview

Two of the photographs are views of Bingham School near Mebane, North Carolina, 1897-1898. The first is of a group of students and teachers posing on the front porch of a building on campus. The people are identified on the reverse of the picture. The second image contains a view of students and a teacher posing with bicycles. The other two photographs are of Colonel Fred Olds with the "Sunshiners," a boys club, on an outing to Beaufort, North Carolina, ca. 1905. One is an interior view of Col. Olds and the boys standing in a dining hall with a table containing plates of food. The other is an outside view of Col. Olds and the boys positioned on a pier with a recently caught shark. The photographs were taken by J. P. Hayes of Raleigh.

See a brief article about these photographs in the March 15, 1995, issue of the Raleigh
News and Observer
by Treva Jones. Mrs. Swindell's husband and brother-in-law are in some of the photographs.
