Descriptive Summary H[orace] McGuire Wood Papers, 1933-1972 Wood, Horace McGuire, 1902-1972. Horace McGuire Wood (1902-1972) came to Black Mountain College (Black Mountain, NC) in 1942 to become the school's business manager and director of the work experience program. He later taught design and construction courses. After they left the college in December 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Wood continued to live at their home in the town of Black Mountain, where he conducted a house planning and building seminar for many years. The papers includes correspondence from both during and after Wood's time at Black Mountain College, work experience program materials, minutes of faculty meetings, Black Mountain College publications, house plans, site plans, and other materials. Biographical Note

Horace McGuire Wood (1902-1972) of Pittsford and Rochester, New York, majored in art and aesthetics at Antioch College after graduation in 1926, he worked for the next several years as a designer and builder of small homes in Rochester and in Delray Beach, Florida. In 1942 he and his friend Gorman Mattison, who was directing the funding activities at Antioch College, were invited by Theodore Dreier to Black Mountain College; Wood to be business manager and to direct the work experience program, Mattison to handle publicity and the fund raising. Mrs. Dorothy Mattison, a newspaper woman, became director of the college news bureau; Wood later taught design and construction courses at the college. The Mattisons left Black Mountain in the summer of 1942 for a position with the community chest of Pittsburgh, PA. Wood was associated with the college until he resigned in December, 1945. However, Mr. and Mrs. Wood continued to live at their home in the town of Black Mountain, where he conducted a house planning and building seminar for many years. Collection Overview

Correspondence, 1933-1971: Thirty-one letters of 1942-1945 cover the period when McGuire Wood directed the work program and taught small house design courses at Black Mountain College. Most of the correspondence is to or from faculty administrators concerning financial arrangements, work schedules, conditions of employment and leaves of absence, discussions of school policy, as well as personal news. A letter of May 25, 1949, is a covering letter from Theodore Dreier, who had resigned, for a copy of his final report on Black Mountain College [not included in the collection]. Two undated drafts of Wood's answer to Dreier give his own critique of the college. An undated draft [1949?] from Wood to "Friends" requests a part-time position at the college during the absence of business manager Theodore Rondthaler.

The letter of 1933 expresses a client's pleasure with a house Wood built for her at Seneca Point [New York]; and the brief note of 1953 from Miss Larsen of the college faculty contains a paragraph describing Black Mountain College. The correspondence of 1963-1971 is from researchers requesting information about the college.

Work Experience Program Materials: As set up by McGuire Wood, the work program included farming, mica mining, maintenance and operation of grounds and buildings, wood cutting for sawmill and firewood, etc. The papers, although generally undated, appear to be from the 1942-1943 school year, and included an outline of Wood's duties; a speech describing the program to the students and introducing his assistant, Mary "Molly" Gregory; and a report of the work accomplished during the fall term of 1942. There are detailed working notes for both the speech and the report, as well as a ledger containing drafts of reports and analyzing the program. Miscellaneous items are lists of work to be done, plans for economizing, reports to sanitation committee, work schedule lists for students, etc. A 6 x 9 notebook lists staff and faculty wives involved in community work, work outlined for the fall of 1943, and a page for each student in the program-with a few notes on some students.

Note: A grading report on students in the work program [1942-1943?] labeled "Private and Confidential" has not been included in the microfilm copy [Mf. P. 132] of this collection. It is in box P.C.1517.2 which is marked with a red "restricted" label. The folder for the report is also marked with a red label and is to be removed before the box is given to Search Room patrons.

Miscellaneous items include a few minutes of special and regular faculty meetings, January 20, 1945-February 5, 1945; and regular and special meetings of the Board of Fellows, January 20-February 6, 1945. There are lists of faculty and courses, 1947-1948; of standing committees for 1942-1943; of faculty credits, n.d.; a news release describes Wood's work at the college. The few financial papers consist of a balance sheet, August 31, 1942; A Plan for an Educational Savings Fund Organization Based on Self-Help, [1942-1943]; financial report of the first Music Institute, September 6, 1944; income and expenses from September, 1943-August 31, 1944; and a notice to veterans concerning the G.I. Bill of Rights, September 20, 1945. Included are the autumn addresses of summer students of 1944; a classroom problem in small house design, n.d.; and a notation concerning the accommodation of guests.
