 Biographical Note

Marion Simon Rose (1901-1980) and Susan Emily Singleton (1915-) were married in June 1936. Both were children of Methodist ministers (the Rev. E. E. Rose and the Rev. Louis Thompson Singleton), and both were graduates of Duke University (he in 1925 and she in 1935). The couple had two daughters born in 1938 and 1941, Susan Emily Rose (subsequently Mrs. Seth Warner) and Mary Southall Rose (subsequently Mrs. Robert Jones III). Mr. Rose was a Durham businessman (the Rose Agency specializing in office supplies) who was active in church and community civic affairs, and Mrs. Rose was a figure in the cultural life of Durham as a singer, actress in musical productions, poet, and activist in the field of public education.

 Collection Overview

At the time of the her marriage of Mr. Rose in 1936, Mrs. Rose commenced an album of photographs taken at their wedding, during their wedding trip, and their first Christmas together. This album was followed by another (1938-1941) in which a photographic record was kept of the birth and early childhood of their first daughter. A third album (1941-1947) was begun with the birth of their second daughter and included photographs of special events and occasions in the lives of the two girls--visits to grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins; Christmases; beach trips; Girl Scout camp, and so forth. A fourth volume continued in the same strain as the third album and into it were put photographs from the lives of the two Rose daughters taken during the years from 1947 to 1950.

Some years after the first volume of family photographs had been completed, blank sheets at the rear of the first album were used to mount photographs of the family of Simon Rose during the 1920s, including one of him in his baccalaureate gown in 1925, and photographs of Miss Singleton taken in the early 1930s prior to her marriage.
