<head>Collection Overview</head>
<p>Richard H. Bacot's letters describe military operations in and around Kinston, N. C., during 1864 and early 1865. The first letter predates his assignment to <emph render="italic">Neuse</emph> and describes the January, 1864, attack upon the Union forces at New Bern. The remainder of the correspondence tells the construction of <emph render="quoted">the Neuse-ance</emph> (as he termed it), grounding of the ship on a sandbar and its later refloating, prospects for winning the war, departure of troops from Kinston, destruction of <emph render="italic">Neuse</emph>, and the 1865 campaign in North Carolina (Wilmington, Bentonville, and Goldsboro). Other subjects of interest include social activities in and around Kinston; family news; and the discovery of the <emph render="quoted">Heroes of America,</emph> a subversive organization made up of followers of W. W. Holden.</p>
<p>Typescript copies of the letters have been prepared, and they are filed with the originals in the collection.</p>
