Biographical Note

<bioghist>

James P. Buchanan of Route 2, Wendell, was a member of Macon Local Union of the North Carolina Division of the Farmers' Educational and Cooperative Union. The principal crops on his farm, located near Lizard Lick and Wendell in Mark's Creek Township, eastern Wake County, were cotton and tobacco. When the Wendell Farmer's Union Warehouse Company was chartered in 1919, Buchanan was elected secretary and treasurer.

Collection Overview

The materials in this collection relate both to the warehouse operation and to Buchanan's farm operations. These include the following:

Wendell Farmer's Union Warehouse Company. The volume with the directors and stockholders minutes for May 1919 to Feb. 3, 1923, also contains a list of the stockholders arranged by local union: Archers, Knightdale, Little River, Macon, Piney Grove, Wilsons Mills, Wake Cross Roads, Wilders Grove, Eagle Rock Academy, Middlesex, and Corinth. These local unions were in eastern Wake, northern Johnston, and southern Nash counties. The minutes are concerned chiefly with finances accruing to the company from the warehouse in Wendell, and the debts and mortgages of the company. Contractural agents operated the warehouse, so operations at the warehouse are not detailed in these minutes.

Buchanan Farm Accounts, 1923-1926. These are five leaves removed from a standard post-bound record book, almost all of which was a blank volume. They contain records of the tobacco sales and cotton sales of both Buchanan and his tenants/share croppers as well as some tenants'/laborers' accounts. A brood stock record dated in 1924 includes swine and cows.

Memorandum of Accounts, 1923. This small booklet includes records of various persons owing for fertilizer, soda, potash, corn, cotton seed, tobacco cloth, tobacco sticks, cucumber seed, potatoes, hay, meal, and so forth. It is unclear whether the debtors are laborers, tenants, sharecroppers, or others.
