Biographical Note

<bioghist>

This collection pertains primarily to the family of Joseph H. M. Bynum (1824-1899) and Mary Ann (Stewart) Bynum (1833-1923) of Vass, Moore County, N.C. The couple were married in 1850. Subsequently, the Bynums purchased land in Moore County. Letters include those from a son, John Bynum, and a granddaughter, Grace Barbour. Mr. Joseph Bynum had a half-brother, Thomas Shaw, who married Emeline [Medlin]. A deposition in the collection concerns the acquisition of land by her brother, Neill Medlin.

Collection Overview

The earliest document in the collection is the 1850 marriage license of Mr. and Mrs. Bynum. The materials include a business post card addressed to Mr. Bynum, four letters written to Mrs. Bynum in 1913 by her granddaughter, Grace Barbour, one written to her by her son, John, in 1914, and two letters belonging to another generation. The letters are of family interest exclusively.

Seven Warranty deeds in the collection range in date from 1867 to 1880 and represent land in Moore County purchased by Mr. Bynum. There are two mortgage deeds executed by him and his wife in 1888 and 1893. Of the warranty deeds, five are not recorded in the present deed books of Moore County (the original books having been destroyed by fire in 1889). Miscellaneous land papers include an 1868 plat, part of an 1888 probate for a deed no longer present in the collection, and an 1894 deposition by Emeline Shaw concerning the acquisition of land by her brother, Neill Medlin, and her husband, Thomas Shaw (half-brother to Mr. Bynum). The last paper in the collection is an 1899 report of the commissioners appointed to set off a year's allowance to Bynum's widow.
