<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="545">Miss Ruth Current (1900-1967), a native of Rowan County, began her association with North Carolina State Extension Service in January, 1928, as home demonstration agent in Statesville and served in that capacity until November 1, 1930. Later she served successively as district home demonstration agent for the Southwest District (1930-1937), state home demonstration agent (1937-1958), and assistant director of extension in charge of home economics programs (1958-1961). </abstract>

<p>The personal papers of Ruth Current include correspondence, clippings, photographs, speeches, articles, notes, reports, newsletters, bulletins, programs, booklets, a notebook, and other miscellaneous items related to her work in the home demonstration field.</p>

<p>General Correspondence (1926-1967, n.d.) of Miss Current contains many letters relative to meetings, programs, speeches, etc., for home demonstration work; letters of Governor Clyde R. Hoey and Dr. Frank P. Graham (1940) concerning the ten-year <title render="quoted">Campaign for Balanced Prosperity;</title> appointments to various committees by Governors Hoey, J. Melville Broughton, and Terry Sanford; congratulations on several awards and <emph render="quoted">Woman of the Year</emph> honors she received; letters relative to promotion (1958) to assistant director of agriculture extensions; and replies from Georgia Neese Clark (Treasurer of the U.S.), Pearl Buck (Mrs. Richard Walsh), and Eleanor Roosevelt (1950-1951) to invitations to speak at the Annual Farm and Home Week.</p>

<p>Special correspondence contains folders on her promotion (1937) to state home demonstration agent; award as Woman of the Year (1953) by the Chi Omegas; superior service award (1954) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; retirement (1961) from home demonstration work. Letters, cards, telegrams, news releases, clippings, programs, photographs, and tributes are included.</p>

<p>The subject files contain information on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Education (1954); Home Demonstration Music Program containing copies of <title render="quoted">Chimes</title> (a mimeographed booklet), programs for workshops, pictures, etc. (1950-1961); and information about the United Nations including letters, programs, speeches, reports, clippings, photographs relating to tours to the U.N. by rural women from North Carolina (1950-1960).

<p>Speeches and published materials includes various published reports and studies (1956-1959, n.d.); speeches, releases, notes, tributes, discussions, articles, etc. (1942-1961, n.d.); typed copy for a column in <title render="italic">Southern Planter</title> and clippings of these columns (1937-1943); Extension publications, <title render="quoted">Green 'n' Growing</title> (booklet published by N.C. Home Demonstration Clubs), <title render="quoted">Extension News,</title> and other miscellaneous newsletters (1940-1961).</p>

<p>Miscellaneous items include a notebook of Miss Current's, containing calendar information, minutes, etc.; clippings relative to <title render="quoted">Extension News;</title> programs of the Peace College Convocation (1964) for which Miss Current was speaker; autographed picture of W. Kerr Scott; various programs of Home Demonstration Club meetings; newsletters and handbook for Delta Kappa Gamma Society.</p>
