 Biographical and Historical Note

For many years prior to his sudden death of a heart attack at age 42 on February 9, 1985, Nick Lovin (1942-1985) was a professional photographer in Richmond County. He continued studio and location work while employed at the Richmond County Daily Journal as their staff photographer.

On January 12, 1995, the Richmond County Historical Association purchased Nick Lovin's collection of photographic materials from his widow, Bobby Sue. On May 18, 2010, the Richmond County Historical Association donated the collection to the Division of Archives and History, Archives Branch, Raleigh.

 Collection Overview

The photo negatives of the Nick Lovin collection are in various formats (2 1/4 x 2 1/4, 6 x 7, and 35mm) from weddings and portraits in the Richmond County area. Collection also contains one contact sheet and a wedding which includes negatives and the corresponding proof prints.

Collection Arrangement

Collection is arranged chronologically using job and negative numbers assigned by photographer Nick Lovin, who used the following prefixes to denote the nature of each job:

A/B = Anniversary/Birthday

C = Commercial

CP = Copy Print

PA = Passport

PO = Portrait

W = Wedding

Job number represents the month and year in which the job was shot, followed by a number indicating chronological order of the project. For example, "PO977-24" indicates that the job is a portrait (PO) shot in September, 1977 (977), and was the twenty-fourth assignment Lovin had that month (-24).
