The State Archives of North Carolina created this website in hopes of sharing newly developed material with the public - most notably North Carolina's educators and students.
As you read the stories in this collection, remember that's exactly what they are; stories. And how do we keep stories alive if not by telling them?
Our state's history is full of stories, and it's our job as storytellers to preserve that history by bringing it into the present.
Each character in these stories was once a real person living in North Carolina, maybe even around your hometown. When we begin to think about these "characters" as real people, its much easier (not to mention more fun) to interact with them in the stories they tell. Imagine yourself in their shoes, research the places they lived and traveled, and be the storytellers that keep our state's history alive.
How to use this archive
After you've chosen a story from the right, you'll be directed to a page that holds a character biography, original documents, images, and links to other websites.
All the original documents and images are downsized and appear to the right of the center column. To take a closer look at any image, just click it and it will enlarge in another window.
To choose a new story, roll over the tabs at the top of the center column and choose the story you would like to read next.
