This school was built by the ERA from material salvaged from an old lumber company office building. The Big Bend community was made up of twelve families marooned in an inaccessible part of Haywood County. With no other school within a nine-mile radius, this new building was the first school in this section in about twenty years. This new school served approximately 25 students and a fulltime schoolteacher.
