Public BuildingsNew School in Big Bend, c.1934.Big Bend School, Haywood County, NC: No date. Emergency Relief Administration, NCERA Photographs, 1934-1936, Box 142For ERA caseworkers to reach the stranded Big Bend community it was necessary to walk twelve miles along a trail that not even mules could maneuver. The trek became more laborious after the trestle of an old lumber railroad washed out. In the absence of a bridge, travelers had to let themselves down from rock to rock by hanging onto protruding roots and shrubs until they reached the bottom of the gorge. After crossing the stream, by hopping from rock to rock, travelers then had to pull themselves back up the other side. Return to Section |
