<p>Mervin L. Lane (1928- ), professor of literature at Santa Barbara City College, studied at Black Mountain College during the years from 1946 to 1948 and again in 1950. Poet, musician, actor, and author, Professor Lane's first published volume (1978) was a collection of some of his poems, <title render="italic">The Houston Passage</title>, with illustrations by Christopher Lang. His second (1985) was a volume of literary studies entitled <title render="italic">Going to Town</title>. His third (1990), was <title render="italic">Black Mountain College: Sprouted Seeds, An Anthology of Personal Accounts</title>.</p>

<p>These four boxes contain correspondence and press cuttings used in, or relating to, preparation of the manuscript for the book. With the exception of <persname normal="Adamic, Louis">Louis Adamic</persname>, <persname normal="Cage, John">John Cage</persname>, <persname normal="Hellman, Robert">Robert Hellman</persname>, <persname normal="Noland, Kenneth">Kenneth Noland</persname>, and <persname normal="Rice, John">John Rice</persname>, there are files for the ninety contributors represented in <title render="italic">Black Mountain College: Sprouted Seeds, An Anthology of Personal Accounts</title>.</p>

<p>Most of the folders include correspondence with Mervin Lane regarding their contribution to the book, and autobiographical sketch prepared by each writer, some of them commenting upon their special experience at Black Mountain College, and later professional achievements. The final addition to each folder is the edited contribution of each author.</p>

<p>There is a substantial amount of information regarding life at Black Mountain in these correspondence files. Many of the contributors comment upon the influence that BMC has had upon their lives, the emotionally challenging and demanding aspects of their student life, and the sexually unrestricted aspects of the communal atmosphere.</p>

<p>Numerous comments are made about the teaching style and classes of art instructor <persname normal="Albers, Josef">Josef Albers</persname>, especially in the files of <persname normal="Bailey, Peggy">Peggy Bailey</persname>, <persname normal="Foster, F. A.">F. A. Foster</persname> and <persname normal="Urbain, John">John Urbain</persname>; dancer <persname normal="Cunningham, Merce">Merce Cunningham</persname> and his involvement with BMC is discussed by <persname normal="Christensen, June">June Christensen</persname> and <persname normal="Jennerjahn, Elizabeth">Elizabeth Jennerjahn</persname>; sexual freedom and communal life are discussed by <persname normal="Cramer, Doughton">Doughton Cramer</persname>, <persname normal="Mangold, Anne">Anne Mangold</persname>, <persname normal="McGee, Bill">Bill McGee</persname>, and <persname normal="Nakata, Ike">Ike Nakata</persname>; the musical concerts are discussed by <persname normal="Davidoff, Judith">Judith Davidoff</persname>; <persname normal="Olson, Charles">Charles Olson</persname> as a major influence upon students is related by <persname normal="Fiore, Mary">Mary Fiore</persname>, <persname normal="Harding, Mildred">Mildred Harding</persname>, and <persname normal="Hellman, Helen">Helen Hellman</persname>; <persname normal="Rice, John">John Rice</persname>, founder of BMC, is discussed by F. Price</persname>, <persname normal="Price, Frank">Frank Price</persname>, and <persname normal="Teeter, Marian">Marian Teeter</persname>; the accidental drowning of BMC student <persname normal="Nacke, Frank">Frank Nacke</persname> is recalled by Ike Nakata, <persname normal="Steinau, Morton">Morton Steinau</persname> and Nacke's sister, Marian Teeter; the artistic life of the College is described by Elizabeth Jennerjahn, <persname normal="Rondthaler, Howard">Howard Rondthaler</persname> and <persname normal="Wood, Patsy">Patsy Wood</persname>; <persname normal="Reiss, John">John Reiss</persname> examines the austere lifestyle of the students and the visits of personalities such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Agnes de Mille; Anne Mangold's refutation of former works on Black Mountain are told from the perspective of a faculty wife during the turbulent years of BMC founder John Rice; former faculty member <persname normal="Dreier, Theodore">Theodore Dreier</persname> comments upon his life after BMC, and details the accidental deaths of both of his sons; artist <persname normal="Krikorian, Leo">Leo Krikorian</persname>'s file includes an article on his ownership of the famous San Francisco bar, <emph render="doublequote">The Place</emph>, which helped to found the <emph render="doublequote">beatnik</emph> generation in the 1950s; Judd Woldin writes about the death of music instructor <persname normal="Jalowetz, Heinrich">Heinrich Jalowetz</persname>; the material from May Sarton is reprinted from one of her published works, and her note comments upon the lasting influence of Black Mountain upon her writing; Albert Einstein's possible affiliation with Black Mountain College is discussed by John Reiss and <persname normal="Thomas, Phyllis">Phyllis Thomas</persname>.</p>

<p>Because numerous BMC students went on to acheive success as professional artists, these boxes of correspondence include numerous brochures and exhibition guides for artists <persname normal="Hillsmith, Fannie">Fannie Hillsmith</persname>, Leo Krikorian, <persname normal="Johnson, Margaret Kennard">Margaret Kennard Johnson</persname>, Elizabeth and <persname normal="Jennerjahn, Pete">Pete Jennerjahn</persname>, John Urbain, and Mary and Joe Fiore. Author <persname normal="Bentley, Eric">Eric Bentley</persname> includes a brochure of his published writing, and F. A. Foster includes a copy of his work, <title render="doublequote">Black Mountain College, 1933-1956.</title></p>

<p>Although declining to offer a written contribution to <title render="italic">Black Mountain College: Sprouted Seeds, An Anthology of Personal Accounts</title>, numerous individuals comment upon their experiences while attending Black Mountain College. The correspondence files for non-contributors are arranged in three chronological files, one file containing undated correspondence, and one file from unidentified correspondents.</p>

<p><persname normal="Way, D. Jacques">D. Jacques Way</persname> comments upon the sexual freedom of the College, and in particular upon John Rice's controversial relationship with a female student, and the resulting conflict with faculty members; <persname normal="Seidler, Harry">Harry Seidler</persname>'s letter of <unitdate type="inclusive">May 3, 1988</unitdate> includes an exhibition catalogue of his architecture and his letter of <unitdate type="inclusive">July 5, 1988</unitdate> includes notes on Design and Color which he took in Josef Albers' art class during the summer of <date>1946</date>; <persname normal="Preger-Simon, Marianne">Marianne Preger-Simon</persname>'s correspondence of <unitdate type="inclusive">February 12, 1988</unitdate> includes photocopies of sketches she made of <persname normal="Taylor, Paul">Paul Taylor</persname> and <persname normal="Charlip, Remy">Remy Charlip</persname> while a student at Black Mountain College.</p>
