No man's land: Land between the German and Allied trenches; area uncontrolled by either side

Old North State: North Carolina

Over the Top: refers to going over the trench top into "no man's land" when charging the enemy in battle

Shrapnel: a type of artillery shell packed with metal balls that exploded in the air, thus dispersing metal over enemy troops. Soldiers also referred to the metal balls as "shrapnel."
